Description

Our Moving Story: Lesson Plans on Migration and Belonging

Part of the Migration Matters Series — An Ancestors Library Resource

Overview

Our Moving Story is a series of 4 lesson plans on migration and belonging. It’s the first teaching resource in the Migration Matters series, part of the new Ancestors Library by Ancestors unKnown.

This 4-lesson unit invites students to explore migrations to the UK as a shared human experience — where people come from, why they move, and how these journeys shape identity and belonging in British society.

Through storytelling, reflection, and historical inquiry, students connect their personal or family stories to broader global histories of movement and displacement.

Perfect for Key Stage 2 classrooms and after-school or community learning!

Want free access to these lessons in exchange for feedback? Contact us to join the Ancestors Library pilot group!

    • Lesson 1: Migration and Chronology – Students establish a clear chronological understanding of the key migration movements—from the earlier settlers to modern times—placing them accurately within the timeline of British history.
    • Lesson 2: Migration and Causation – Students develop critical thinking by exploring the diverse and often complex causes (e.g., persecution, famine, work opportunities) that have driven people to move to the UK.
    • Lesson 3: Impact of Migration – Students analyse the profound impact these migrations have had on shaping every aspect of contemporary British society, culture, language, and tradition.
    • Lesson 4: Migration and My Story – Students apply the historical concepts of chronology, causation, and impact to their own personal or community history, conducting an oral history interview to connect individual migration experiences to the broader UK narrative.
